There are 3 different “levels” of challenging

There are 3 different “levels” of challenging behavior that typically occur in young children. I think of these levels in order to help me figure out how to approach each child.

1️⃣🟩 Code green behaviors: This is the type of behavior you can expect to see in this age. Young children haven’t learned to self-regulate yet. While they’re figuring it out, big emotions and challenging behaviors will happen. This doesn’t mean something is wrong, but we need to help children learn how to self-regulate.

2️⃣🟨 Code orange behaviors: when neurodivergence is in the room (and it’s in every room). Added considerations like sensory overload and processing difficulties will shape how we can best support children and guide behavior breakdowns.

3️⃣🟥 Code red behaviors: dangerous, ongoing, “derail your entire class” sort of behaviors. Often (but not always) this happens because a child isn’t getting their safety needs met at home, has experienced trauma, or has extreme processing challenges.

👆 Most educators can think of at least 1 or 2 children they’ve cared for who show behaviors like this, and the impact it has on us is profound.

Some years are just HARD…

And knowing what “level” of behavior you’re working with will help you identify the best path forward.

In addition to these levels, I then view all behavior as communication.

There are 6 needs a child might be communicating:
1. Certainty
2. Variety
3. Significance
4. Connection
5. Growth
6. Contribution

Identifying which level they’re at and what need they have is a game changer.

As educators, a crucial mindset is all behavior is communication to get a need met.

This can help save you from being triggered.

Children actually do not have access to the part of the brain to calm themselves down. Many adults don’t have access!

The 6 core needs are: Certainty, Variety, Significance, Connection, Growth, and Contribution.

Did you know that almost every challenging behavior originates from one of the six core needs?

Inside the Child Behavior Guidance Certification (So excited about this!)- you learn exactly what a meltdown looks like relative to each core need and how to handle those meltdowns.

And when it is about a boundary or limit - how to handle that . When you interact with a meltdown and its a boundary you are going to deal with that differently than a meltdown “I’m hungry”.

How you deal with each of the meltdowns is different so it honors and respects the classroom boundaries and limits. And honoring where the child is.

Everytime a child has a meltdown, they are simply

Everytime a child has a meltdown, they are simply trying to get their needs met. Needs like hunger, rest, boredom, or frustration. The meltdown is how they communicate their needs.

They are not trying to manipulate us! They are overwhelmed.

They are simply trying to get a need met.

Here’s the thing. When we view behavior through the filters of:
“They are just trying doing that for attention or to get their way” - and you treat them like that - 9 times out of 10 - the behavior will escalate. It feeds the misbehavior.

As educators, a crucial mindset is “all behavior is communication to get a need met.”

This can help save you from being triggered.

When was the last time you felt wonder? ✨

The kind that makes your chest swell. Your eyes a little watery. Butterflies in your belly. 🦋

A tingle in your fingertips…

For me, it always happens when I’m traveling. Stunning architecture, new and old. Artwork that makes a statement.

Food that makes my tastebuds happy... and landscapes that fill me with awe.

Wonder is electric. Pure magic.

And yet — it’s so hard to come by.

As early childhood educators (frankly, as human beings!) we are bombarded with information… not so much inspiration.

Do this, not that.

Get this done. Do it right.

Don’t mess up.

So many rules. So much to live up to…

Herein lies the problem: it’s near impossible to create magic with children when your cup is empty.

Think back to the last time you had a meltdown. Wo

Think back to the last time you had a meltdown. Would you be receptive to your loved one telling you to calm down and get on with it? Probably not.

Second, I want you to think of it like this - children have rights. The right to be treated with respect. Letting them calm down is a respectful thing to do with any human.

AND rights come with responsibilities. When they calm down, we need to circle back and set boundaries.

What does it really take to help young children learn the skill of self-regulation in 2024?

Understand they are learning how to communicate their needs.

Give them SPACE to move through their upset with safety and acceptance.

After they are calm (which can take 7 minutes or 70 minutes) - help them identify what emotions they were experiencing.
